Shabnam Bhamani has been cutting, dyeing and finishing clothes in Karachi for the better part of forty years. She does not design to a season. She designs to a woman — the line of her shoulder, the way she will sit at a dinner, the twenty years she intends to keep the piece.
The work begins with cloth. Handloom cottons, raw and crushed silks, chiffon, organza, khaddar — sourced piece by piece, never in bulk, and rejected without ceremony if the hand is wrong. Chikankari, sheesha, zardozi, cross-stitch and aari work are done by artisans she has known for decades. Nothing is repeated at scale. What arrives in Atlanta this August is, quite literally, one of each.
Her rarest gift is colour. Anyone can match a dupatta to a kurta; Shabnam will put mustard against powder blue, rust against emerald, blush against black, and make the pairing look like it was always meant to be. It is the thing her clients cannot get anywhere else, and the reason so many of them have been dressing with her since the nineties. Every piece is one of a kind, and custom orders are welcome.
